Blessing Hands is a US Public Charity that is currently helping 316 students in China with school aid. This number includes students from primary age all the way to college. They also are involved in projects to improve health and living conditions for those living in remote areas of China.

Water purification is one of their projects to supply 2,630 Yao minority children with affordable water purification systems in 8 village schools. The cost of one system is $1,750.

$25 to $15 contributions will go a long way toward financing one of these purifiers, or you can give one completely yourself. Christina Zhang has taken this fund raising project to her heart and is cooking wonderful cupcakes. She is a high school senior determined to help others. Come help her reach her project goals. She was a Governor's Scholar last summer. Her father is Eric Zhang from Yunnan Province, who serves on our Blessing Hands' Board of Directors.

Shang Mei Primary School
Gets Clean Water.

Shang Mei Primary School got pure water for the first time without boiling water in December. These Yao minority kids need never fear Hepatitis A and other water carried diseases again.

The electrolysis unit only needs salt and power to serve a whole village and school. One system costs $1,750. Even if you can't come to the party, you can give the Yao schools their own clean water.

A Look Back and Forward

This newsletter is a summary of what Blessing Hands did last year and our plans for next year. It is a kind of an Annual Report. We want to be accountable for what was given to us to bless others.

Yangshuo

High school kids got new T-shirts

We gave tuitions and school aid to students of all ages in Yangshuo China including giving T-shirts to the older kids. We spent $17,586 on students in Yangshuo last school year.

This coming July, we hope to have a Friendship Camp in Yangshuo to serve both our Blessing Hands students and other students who want to come from America or China. We want to include counselors and teachers from both the USA and China. If you want more information about this camp write to this link.

Qinzhou

Qinzhou No. 1 High School Students

We supported tuition for 160 high school students in Qinzhou, China. $23,496 was our commitment there this past year, and we are planning the same for the present school year. We are looking for sponsors for these students. All of our other students now have sponsors. If you want to be a sponsor of a high school student go to this link. University Scholarships

We gave university and college scholarships worth $23,834 to students in Yangshuo, Qinzhou, and Du'an last year. This school year we have 43 scholarship students. The photo below shows the scholarship students in Nanning, who came for a dinner with Kasey and John Randal Towles in July.

Du'an County

Health Assistant Workshop in Longfu Township

We had a health assistant workshop in Longfu Township last summer. Janet Gross, a graduate level nurse, taught health assistants and village doctors using the book Where There is no Doctor. $10,473 went to various Du'an programs including water purifiers, the health assistant workshop, medical supplies to Longfu Hospital, and matching funds for a medical van for the hospital.

We have been asked to return next July and teach a special one day HIV training. We also will be installing at least two more water purifiers in Longfu primary schools. Last year we started a new program in An Long in Guizhou Province among the Buyi minority.

We plan to expand in that area in the future by promoting for primary school library books and musical instruments. If you want to give library books, go to this link. There are more pictures of the schools on that page also.

Wei Senbao is still too young to have his operation, but we are still getting funds ready for him. $3,155 was put into his fund this year.

Leanna Gilliam had a wonderful time last summer as a summer intern. We are selecting another intern in January to go in July of 2012. If you would like to apply, send e-mail to this link. Blessing Hands gives interns $500 per trip, but they have to pay the rest of their expenses.

Yearly Summary
Where does the money go?

Sometimes people want to know how much of the money we receive goes to students and programs to benefit others. I am always interested myself to see the percentages. We have finished our 990 EZ form that the government requires for last year and have the figures now.

We did not do any fundraising last year, so there is not a percentage for that. Let me say that sponsor donations are always given to the sponsored students. I am a volunteer, but we have a full time staff member and two part time staff members in China. Our accounting year begins with the school year, so these figures are for the last full school year.

You can see from the pie chart that 93.72% of our funds go to program services and only 6.27% goes for management and other expenses. We are determined to spend as much as possible on blessing others.

Give a Christmas Gift that Changes a Life

Feng Keli has a sponsor now for a year.

Recently a Christmas gift was given to an American Family and a Chinese family all at once. I received a sponsorship for one of our high school boys that was given as a Christmas present to an American family. What a great idea, especially so close to Christmas when it is almost too late to shop. In one act of blessing, the gift reached into a Chinese and US family. I've seen catalogs of Christmas gifts, but this one keeps on giving to both families. The student can write to both his sponsor and the family that received the gift and keep them updated on his progress in school and life.

You can see pictures of more students who need sponsors at this link. Be a blessing to one of them and give a sponsorship as a Christmas gift. It just cost $160 to pay their tuition for a year. You can also see more students at this link on our website. There is even a Google Checkout button there where you can give by credit card. Do it now before the end of the year.

One more school never has to worry about water borne diseases again or boil water to protect their children.

Dongfeng Li

Dongfeng Li is a nationally acclaimed artist in oriental brush, watercolor/pastel portrait/figure painting, and plein air painting. He began his art education in China and earned a MA and MFA since 2000 in the United States. He has taught workshops in all of these media for the last 12 years. He currently teaches at the Department of Art &

Design at Morehead State University in Kentucky.

His work has won awards in competition including the IDE Memorial Award at the 2008 American Watercolor Society International Exhibition. Li is a national award-winning painter and an American Watercolor Society Annual exhibition award winner.

He is a professional and experienced educator, who has also taught school children for many years. He organized and taught in painting workshop tours of China in 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009.

I received a very encouraging letter recently from a person in Singapore who gave online for one of our scholarship students. H

e said he took a month to search all the websites for a child to sponsor. It made me cry when he explained why he selected Blessing Hands help him sponsor a student. I have put his own words here so you can see why I cried.

I really admire your ambition and thank you for helping the rural students in China. It is definitely not easy to setup a charity foundation, moreover have to run it. Yes, I'm from Singapore. I appreciate that you added me into Blessing Hands family.

  I was browsing the internet using Google search engine to find an organization to sponsor a child, however, to my amazement, I was being overwhelmed by the number of websites. I slowly browsed through them since August, however, most websites are either not user friendly or did not state how much percentage of the amount donated will benefit the child. I was surprised by the transparency of your foundation hence I decided to go into this.

  Yes, I did see her profile and would like to thank you for your strategy of posting their videos. At times by looking at words and pictures, I would be afraid that such a charity foundation might be a fraud. However, after looking at the video, it really touched me deep down. Hence, I should not deprive them from going forward and be eager to excel and learn.

Wow. Her letter to
you is so full of love also. Thus this proves what you have done is extremely meaningful.

One reason I chose Blessing Hands is that it is not a large organization. A huge organization normally has funds from authority and is well known by everyone. Hence, their monthly intake of donations could be unbelievably high. Hence, there are possibilities of anyone misusing the funds.

I decided to sponsor a child, and there goes one month of hunting. I believe in fate. It's fate that brought us together. From the website, the videos, the Facebook application, I could see you put in a lot of effort, not to mention your love for the kids.

Lexington Moon Festival

The Zhang family and volunteer Hao Zhang hosted a table to raise money for a water purifier at the Moon Festival. They made baked goods and jewelry to sell. The family raised $110. Eric is one of the members of our board.

Hong Lin, who went to China last summer and met Wei Senbao, raised $817 by selling moon cakes before the festival and winning the prize for the best moon cakes. She donated it all for his medical needs.

Blessing Hands sold Chinese food at the Arts and Eats Festival with half of the proceeds going to Rowan County Christmas. This local charity helps families have a fuller Christmas each year in Rowan County.

We had a great group of volunteers including ten Chinese students and teachers from Morehead State University. Two brought their children, who helped give away postcards made from Yangshuo children's painting. The festival was a great success.

These cute kids were in a church class I visited to share about our kids in China. If you would like a Blessing Hands person to speak to your convention, church, school, or club, let us know. The kids came the next day with money they wanted to give to our Chinese children. They sold some items to make the money.

I am Wu Qinyan, a science student. I come from Qinzhou No.1 Middle School. I am sincerely grateful for the help of Blessing Hands. With Blessing Hands' help, I was able go on studying in school. I will never forget the help Blessing hands gave me.

I grew up poor living with two sisters and one brother. My mother died of an illness just as I started to go to primary school. My father is a farmer. We have little money and few possessions. My sisters got married four years ago. Therefore, my family's able-bodied members decreased. My father is 59 years old, and his labor strength is weak. My brother dropped out of school, because of sickness.

I will go to college in the near future. My dream is to be an English teacher. I will always be ready to help others and to do more for society in the future to make my Life more meaningful. I hope you will help me to achieve my goals.

Lisa wanted to be an English teacher but has accepted a place at the Beihai College of Beihang University to study accounting for 4 years. Students in China do not always get to choose their major. It depends on what major the college that accepts them wants. She was so earnest in her interview that she almost cried.

Evian will study clinical medicine at Guilin Medical College for three years. Evian wants to be in the medical field. There are 6 in her family, including her parents, who are handicapped and can't work much, and three younger children. She herself has an illness. They are farmers but have little income. She is from Qinzhou, China. She interviewed early so she could go to work for the summer to help herself with tuition for college.

My name is Mo Yuanhong. I come from Qinzhou No. 1 Middle School. Now I intend to study medicine. My mother and father are farming at home. There are four children to study at home. The family cannot afford expensive school fees. The hands of my parents have had serious injury (arthritis that always pains them). They do not do heavy work.

Lewis' mother is from a minority group, but he lives with his father and grand- mother. He will go three years to an agriculture college, Guangxi Agricultural College to learn gardening and agriculture technology. He is from Pingji High school, a rural school in Qinzhou Prefecture. This is the first year that students from his school have applied for scholarships.

My family is very poor now. I can't change it, but it can't defeat me. Because I have a dream and there are a lot of people concerned about me-kind people. I thank you.

Let me introduce my family. We live in a small village named Da Tian Pin in the Qinzhou Prefecture. There are three people in my family, Grandma, Father and me. We are happy though our family is poor. I got Blessing Hands' tuition help in high school, which made us more happy than before and relieved my father. I believe that if the world has love, the world will be more beautiful.

I was born in a small village in 1993. I was happy with a peaceful family. Unluckily, when I was seven years old, my father died from electricity in our village's water system. My mother couldn't accept the fact and left us alone.

After my father died, my sister and I lived with our grandparents. OUr daily life income depended on our uncle. At first our grand- parents could grow vegetables and corn to support our poor family. When they became older and older, their bodies got worse and even to do some small things they needed greater power. Last summer, grandpa suffered from several kinds of diseases and was in danger of dying. Luckily, he came to life finally.

When I needed food in senior high school, I had to rely on other's help to graduate from Yangshuo Experimental Middle School. Recently my mother came back, but she married another man. I and my sister still live with my grandparents, because we can understand why she left in a hurry.

We are satisfied with our life. Thanks to hope, Blessing Hands' help, and my grandparent's insistence on bringing us up, when I got into difficulties, they taught me how to find my confidence and gave me hope. As our family has it hard, I need help to complete my college dream.

of the family are all on her mother since her father has fallen sick. Hong has been accepted at Yongjiang University, and will study three years to become a secretary. She got a summer job in Guangdong but came all the way back on the train to Qinzhou to interview with us for a scholarship. She is from Pingji High School.

I am Li Hong from Pingji Middle School in Guangxi, Qinzhou City. My family has six people - my mother and father, a older brother and two sisters. I am the youngest child in my family. With Blessing Hands' help my family has greatly improved, reducing the burden of my mother.

My family's living expenses are all on my mother since my father suddenly became sick and cannot farm or work. We need a lot of medicine to treat him. I watch my mother work so hard. I would give up school, but she will not agree. She tells me to hold on to my dream. My family has no ability to pay for me to go to the university. If you can give me help, you will change my fate. You can help me realize my dreams. I am waiting for your good news.

If I get your help and have the ability, I would help those that need help and do volunteer work. I want to do good deeds to return to society what I have received, transferring that love to everyone. Finally I sincerely wish you and your home joy, health, and happiness every day.

I'm eager to go to college where I can learn more, but a lot of money it needed if I go there. It's too much for my family of six people - my grandparents, my parents, my brother and I. Both of my grandparents are over 70 and my parents are famers. My father is 50 with a heavy stomachache for years. For years, my father must work at Guangdong to make ends meet, but that is far away from my hometown.

I know that going to college is the best way for us students, who come from poor families, to change our fate. If we can go to college to receive further education, we will have more ability to help others who need help, and maybe we can change many other people's life just as you do. I believe that the world will be more peaceful and full of love.

I dream of going to college, but my family can't afford the tuition. I wonder if you will help me! Best wishes.

Sue Rong Shijiao wants to be a teacher of physics. Her parents and grandparents are farmers, but her father has had to work away from home in Guangdong to support the family, even though he has severe stomach aches. They family can't afford to send her to college. She wants to help people like Blessing Hands has helped her. Guangxi Normal College has accepted her into their four year program.

I'm from Qinzhou Number 1 Middle School. My name is Fu Dexiu. I think I am a lucky dog, because I'm a member of Blessing Hands. I feel kindness and helpfulness between the others in Blessing Hands. I have a chance to study. They have given me wings that I can fly to the sky where I belong.

After taking the national exam my score is 385. I am not satisfied with the score but I believe that if I study hard, I can create space that belongs to me. I plan to go to the university. I want to study. I believe my dream will come true in the future by studying hard.

I want to go to college very much, but my family can't offer help now. I have a sister, a brother, and a mother. My younger sister is studying in a middle school. My brother doesn't study in school. He is 20 but he can't find a job. Only my mother works hard, but she can't offer me help. Because of my family's situation, there is no offer of help for me. I really want to go to the university, so I hope I can get your help to go to the university.

I will study hard and do some things to help others in my free time. If people need something, I will spare no effort to do something to help them. I will take the love you give and spread it around me to make people also be full of love.

I am studying business. However, I'm afraid that my family can't afford my college tuition. There are five people in my family: grandma, father, younger brother, younger sister and I. My mother passed away when I was very young. What's worse, my father got ill seriously many years ago, and he can't work any longer. Besides, my grandma is so old that she can't work to support us, either. Now, what worries me most is that I can't afford the tuition of college.

Sand Lu Yuanlian will study computer science. His father passed away when he was 13. His little brother had to leave school when he was 15. His mother is a farmer but is often sick. Friends of Blessing Hands will be selling jewelry, baked goods, and cakes for the benefit of the Wei Senbao's medical fund and other Blessing Hands projects at this festival.

Last year a special friend of Blessing Hands won the moon cake contest and gave the prize money to Wei Senbao.

She was able to meet him this summer when her family traveled to China. This

year she is taking orders for moon cakes and has already raised $600 for Wei. It is very time consuming to make moon cakes so that might be her limit.

Chinese Moon Festival

Free Admission

Chinese gather during the full moon in the month of September to enjoy the moon and family. They eat special traditional moon cakes and share in family fun.

Lexington's moon festival is Saturday September 10 at the Moon Dance Amphitheater in Beaumont Centre Circle, Saturday 4 pm - 8 pm, September 10, 2011.

Activities include a talent show, drawing contest, moon cake competition, Chinese essay and drawing contest, dance and music performances.

To participate in the essay and drawing contest, please fill out the Painting and Essay Competition Registration Form. More information is at this link.

The event is hosted by the Kentucky Chinese America Association every year. There will be displays by community groups & vendors especially from 2 to 4 o'clock.

When I was young, I lived a happy life. I have a big family, and then, we can stay together happily .But happy times don't keep too long. An accident happened. Up to now, I still remember the dark night when I heard the bad news, and I burst into tears -- my father was dead in an accident.

I nearly burst apart. I don't know why the catastrophe happened in my family, and I lost my familiar father. My father, who loved me deeply, was gone forever, and I no longer see him again though I miss him very much. Every time I remember the days when I stayed with my father, my tears will fall. There is a big scar in my heart. I never forget it.

Four years have passed since God took away my father, but I have a great mother. Now my mother is working hard, and so is my older sister. They are working hard in order to keep our family. However, my old grandfather is in poor health, and my grandmother is too old to do anything.

The world is filled with love. I dream that one day I can make money myself. I'm sure there is something, which I can do for the poor. Only when we can take a small step, will the world have a big change!

My name is Ye Xin and my English name is Air. I like foreign languages and the subject of Distribution Management, so I will choose from these two subjects when I enter college.

However, the cost of my schooling is still a difficulty to my family. My mother and father have been divorced for one and a half years. Now, I live with m mother. Unfortunately, my mother was diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago. Though she is better now, the treatment has destroyed her so seriously that she can't go to work even now.

My grandparents have to give our cost of living. During vacations, I also get some part-time jobs to earn our living. I know there will be more cost of schooling in college, so my grandparents and mother will suffer more pressure. I think it is my duty to share their pressure, especially now that I am a grown-up. But my energy is limited, and I pretty well need your help. Can you give me a chance by supporting my cost of tuition?

I intend to be a volunteer to help children who have no families and older people who need love from society. I think it is my responsibility as a person to help others. I learned that from you, Blessing Hands. I want to share my volunteer work by taking photos and writing diary entries to send you every month. Dear Janet and Miss Ma,

How are you? Welcome to Longfu and thanks for giving us classes. It is our honor to attend those ten-day classes.

After training classes, we really know what health is. What's more, we have learned very basic but important knowledge from both of you. Now we can use this theory to cure our patients in daily time.

Thank you very much. The book whose name is Where there is no Doctor is very useful. I think this book is perfect for remote villages where there is a lack of doctors. It can guide us to promote our health system.

My Mom has been dead for 13 years. Mom suffered disease after I was born. Mom still loved me very much. To treat my Mom's disease, our money was used up.

My father is just a farmer, and we couldn't pay the money to treat my Mother's disease. So, we borrowed money from friends, 20,000 yuan ($3,125 USD) in all. But, unfortunately, My Mom died when I was 5.
We just have a little farm land with no house. We must rent a place to live. I need a scholarship to go to college. I always studied hard, because I want to study in the university. I want to be a doctor and help anyone.

I am a science student and want to teach children who need knowledge. I want to change their lives. Now I am studying hard at school, hoping to go to the university, but my family cannot afford my tuition.

My dream is to become a doctor. I hope to do more for my family and society, save more patients, and help them alleviate their pain. When I was a child, my mother suffered from a rare blood disease, but my family was very poor. My father needed to borrow a lot of money from here and there to save my mother. However, unfortunately, when I went home from school, my mother had passed away, and I didn't have time to see her last face and talk to her. We were very sad.

In order to bring us up and let us go to school to study, father worked himself too hard. Two years ago, my father began to bleed and was diagnosed with liver disease. However, he just took some medicine and continued to work hard every day. His liver disease became more and more serious. Now my father needs to go to the hospital for treatment. Father doesn't have a job and needs to take care of my grandma, because my grandma fell down and broke her leg last year.

Therefore, I hope to have the opportunity of your support. Because my family is still very poor and can't afford my expensive college tuition, therefore, I write this letter to you. Where there is a will, there is a way.

We were anxious to find out the condition of Wei Senbao 韦森宝 this summer. He is the four year old boy, who has a malformation from birth that causes his cheek to be swollen. It is a cystic Lymphangioma that is a "malformations of the lymphatic system, which is the network of vessels responsible for returning to the venous system excess fluid from tissues". The blockage will get worse as he grows, but treatment too soon is not advised either. However, waiting too long is also a problem since it can affect the growth of his neck.

"The prognosis for Lymphangioma is generally very good. Surgical removal of the tumor is the typical treatment provided, with the understanding that additional removal procedures will most likely be required as the Lymphangioma grows. Most patients need at least two procedures done for the removal process to be achieved, " Dr. Ke tells us. He was with the group that hiked up to see the Ling Wang Kindergarten children and Wei Senbao. He is from Shanghai and may be able to suggest the proper specialist when the time comes for treatment.

Generous donors made possible Wei's diagnosis in Beijing last summer. $3,134 USD is left for his future treatment, so we have about half of what is needed $6,268 (40,000 yuan) for his medical care. hour train trip from Nanning to get to An Long. Guizhou is the poorest province of China I hear. We went to the An Long No. 1 High School to find three Buyi students to support with tuition. Yaya Luo, one of our staff members who is a Buyi herself, invited us to visit her family and opened the door for Blessing Hands to help her old high school.

We intended to select three students, but when the financial aid office arranged for us to interview seven students, we just could not turn any of them down. John Randall Towles, who is about their age, really identified with them.

Her mother is the only support of the family. An older sister is married and can't contribute to the support of the family. Her village is far away and poorer than other villages. She was 63th in her class when she first entered high school, but now she has raised her rank to 14th in her class.

Longest Serving Village Doctor

We had a very successful Health Assistant Workshop in Longfu. Eighteen village doctors and health assistants participated with many others dropping in for special sessions. Janet Gross was our lead teacher, assisted by Blessing Hands intern, Leanna Gilliam.

Letters the students read on the last day showed their gratitude and respect for Janet Gross. Janet came from Africa without any pause to teach the class to the eager students. She is a Ph.D. trained nurse with cross cultural experience. She will be in Haiti next.

Team Members Will Never Forget Their Experiences

Kasey Towles gave gifts to children everywhere she went.

Kasey Towles and her son John Randall Towles have a special reason to love the kids of China. Their family adopted daughter Jubilee there six years ago. They sang at schools and hugged kids for three weeks. John Randall bought a guitar to assist in the performances. He was a perfect traveler, never complaining and always helpful to everyone.

Leanna Gilliam had never been abroad before and had many new experiences. She hiked up to the Ling Wang School with the group from Lexington Chinese Christian Fellowship.

Hong Lin and her family came from Lexington to see the children that their Vacation Bible School supports with extra food. She brought two friends, who are researchers with doctor's degrees, Dr. Zunji Ke and Dr. Siying Wang, who also brought his daughter.

We could never have done so much without the aid of great volunteer translators and our staff members there. Pan Lan, Shi Huaping, Yaya Luo and many others helped translate.

Mandy Ma with Long Wang Primary School Water Purifier

Mandy Ma is the Blessing Hands director in Longfu, and was very effective as translator, coordinator, and tour guide. She arranged for local officials to meet us and cleared the way for the installation of a water purifier at Long Wang Primary School.

Yaya Luo gave out toothbrushes at Liushan Primary

Yaya Luo, our director in Yangshuo, helped us for the whole trip, even taking three of us to Guizhou Province to visit her family and begin a tuition program for Buyi students from her old high school.

Mr. Liang, Health Inspector of Du'an County, helped install the water purifier at Long Wang Primary School.

This newsletter is only about our Health Assistant Workshop, water purifier, and school support projects in Longfu Township. We will tell about our experiences in Yangshuo, Qinzhou, and An Long in other newsletters. We also interviewed college scholarship applicants, so we will be talking about our trip for several more newsletters.

I wish I could take you all along to see what your support is doing in China. Just today, I checked on all our business donation jars, which accumulated $50 to feed primary kids while I was in China. Seeing the kids get that food is something I wish all of you could do.

These are two of the health assistants from the Yao minority that we support in Longfu Township. They will be studying in our Health Assistant Workshop in June for 10 days. The book used in the class is called, Where there is No Doctor. We leave on June 18th and will be gone for three weeks. I will try to keep up with E-mail while we are gone, but I can't post to our blog from China.

Medical supplies gathered at the Shower

We will be leaving on the 18th of June for China. We are packing every last medical item we can fit into our 44 pound suitcases. Holly Lucas has been great to help us get everything listed and packed.People's Clinic and St. Claire Medical Center have also given many supplies. Thanks goes to them for helping the Yao minority people of China.
