Could You Rent Me 3000 Yuan? ($440 US)
Huang Jiayan's Plea for a ScholarshipSeptember 12, 2009
Dear Betty
I am Huang Jiayan. I am very happy to have a chance to write to you and thank you very much. I am very sorry to bring trouble to you, but I do not know what to do. I quickly need someone who can help me, I am very sorry.
If I enter my college, I have to have 3000 yuan ($440)for tuition, but my family does not have so much money to support me, and my younger brother also will use much money to go to school. My father works day and night. Even he was ill and does not have any rest, but he will not use any money to see a doctor, because he wants to use the money to support me and my brother to go to school. He seems old.
I know you are a good sponsor. I have a presumptuous request. Could you rent me 3,000 yuan ($440 US)? I swear I will study hard and work hard. Once I can afford it, I will pay it back to you. I know I should not do so, but please forgive me. I do not have any other way. Could you please help me? Believe me I will not let you down.
I hope you could help me, because only in this way can I change my life. I am very sorry.
Thank you very much,
Best Wishes,
Huang Jiayan
Yesterday Was My Birthday

What do you do when you get a letter from a desperate student like Huang Jiayan, who has a deadline to pay her tuition? We have a protocol that determines when we feature each student who applies for our scholarships. A scholarship committee reviews each application after they are interviewed. Huang Jiayan's time to be featured in our newsletter to find a sponsor was a long time away from when she needed the money. When I got her letter asking me to "rent" her moneyfor her scholarship, I knew she really needed it now. So I personally "rented" her the tuition in a loan, hoping that when her time came to be featured, she would get a sponsor to cover her tuition and let me off the hook.
For my birthday, I asked friends on facebook to give toward her tuition. Three friends said they would send checks, and another friend said I could apply her recent $150 gift to Huang Jiayan, when I told her the story. Another good friend gave me a $20 birthday check with Blessing Hands on it, saying " I knew not to make the check to you, because you would just give it to the Blessing Hands kids anyway."
I hope these gifts are going to add up to a full $500 scholarship for her, but I am not sure how much the facebook friends are sending in their checks. So I am featuring her in this newsletter and asking other sponsors to send in enough to finish up her scholarship.

If too much comes in, I know other students from last year whose sponsors could not renew their support. They need help too. Please give me the best birthday present I ever had. - education for a student.

Below you can read Jiayan's scholarship essay, and you can see her video at this address.
Huang Jiayan My name is Huang Jiayan
There are six people in my family: Grandfather, Grandmother, Father, Mother, a younger brother and me. We are farmers and live in the country.
My Dad has not read many books, and there is no knowledge for him. So he can only rely on manual work and even little money to be paid for that. My mother is in poor health, and she cannot work hard labor, so the economic consumption is more than a person can maintain. Besides my Grandpa and Grandma's physical condition is not good, and sometimes they need to be taken care of by other people.
I want to go to the university because I want to gain more knowledge. Knowledge is power. If I have the power, I can have the ability to improve the condition of my family as well as helping other people who live in difficulty. My younger brother is also going to high school, so the expense of the family has increased, but my father's meager income cannot afford more. My father does not have the ability to support us. I would like to apply for a scholarship, and I hope to be able to complete the university.

Thank you very much.
Huang Jiayan

Liang jianzhen

I know my family will not be able to
afford the whole expense of college.
Liang Jianzhen always thinks of helping his family.

Liang Jianzhen is a graduate of the best high school in Qinzhou, and his 17 year old brother is there also. His family values education for their sons. His mother is in poor health and often needs medicine. His father is the only one working to support the large family.
In his thank you letter to Blessing Hands he says, " Without your help, it would have been more difficult to finish my study. Maybe I can't stay in the classroom any more. From your help, I get to know the meaning of life, and I will pass the blessing to others in the future."

Jianzhen is accepted by Guangxi Normal University. He plans to major in accounting.
Now, I introduce myself to you.

My name is Liang Jianzhen. I was born in a small village which is far away from Qinzhou, into a farm family with two sisters and a little brother. Because of our poor condition, our family still lives a hard life.
When I was little, my sisters both dropped out of school because my father didn't have enough money for their study, so they had to go to work instead. Before long, they both married workers and had their own families, so they had no ability to support us anymore.
My grandmother is in her eighties and has to stay in bed all day long. So my mother must care for her day and night and cannot do anything else. My brother is just two years younger than me, in other words, he is now a high school student in our school, too. With us brothers both in school, we have to spend much more money.
As a farmer, my father stays at home all year long, planting a little corn and feeding some birds for some money. In this way he can earn a little money, but when it can't cover our whole expense, then my family is in trouble.logo
Sometimes, I would rather drop out of school and do some thing for my family, but I have no choice but to study in school. College life is around the corner, but there is something that I worry about, I know my family will not be able to afford the whole expense of college. I don't know how to do it.
However, I am really eager to go to college, so I really need help for college. If I can go to college, I will devote myself to the cause. I will pass the love of Blessing Hands to others and will have a bright future.

Thanks,
Liang Jianzhen

Lu Haidan Wants to Teach

A Brother's Love for His Family

We have heard of sisters sacrificing for brothers, but Lu Haidan's brother is giving up his chance for an excellent high school to save money for his family. Students in China test into high schools as well as colleges. The best students go to the best high schools. Lu Haidan's sixteen year old brother will go to high school this fall, a very expense undertaking, since there is no government tuitions for high school.

However, if a student gives up their chance to attend the best high school they are qualified for and enters a more inferior high school, their tuition is waved and they can also get scholarships. Lu Haiden's brother has done this to save money for his family.

Won't you help Lu Haidan too? She is the one outstanding student chosen from her high school to be a Blessing Hands student. Her Engllogoish name is Angelia. She speaks excellent English. She wants to be a physics or English teacher.

You can see her Youtube video on this page.

Sincerely,
Betty Cutts

I hope you can give me a hand.

Hello! My name is Lu Haidan. I'm 18 years old and have been a Blessing Hands student for three years. I have learned many things from them, like kindness. I believe that I can pass down love to others who need it.

I lost my father when I was 8 years old. Besides, my mother is a person with a disability who can't work. Fortunately, after my father died, my family got $180 yuan ($26.43 US) for living expenses every month from his working department as he was a worker there before. Also, we got a little financial help from our grandpa, so that my younger brother and I were able to go to school. My mother sent us to my grandpa's home. She hoped we could live a better life there. Mother lives alone. If we have a holiday, we will go home to keep her company. Our neighbors are friendly to us. They often give food to us.

However, my younger brother is going to high school next semester, and I am going to university, too. As he was worried about the burden of heavy financial problems, he decided to go to a subordinate high school. In our town, when a student with a better grade enrolls in an inferior high school, they will not only get their tuition waived totally but also scholarships. Therefore, my younger brother made such a choice.

I did not want his decision to be affected because of me. We have relied on government assistance and on tuition reductions from school since our childhood. Now, I have received admission to college. I have been accepted by a university. My future is not a great university. but I will study hard. My family asked me to test for a post-graduate university later. I am thinking on this issue. I think I should do it, but we cannot say what will be.

In short, I hope I could get your help. Thank you!

I get their e-mail and hear their stories.

I know that we are sending many newsletters in a very short time. College has started in China, and we only have a short window to find sponsors. Please forgive us if you are not interested in the scholarship requests. After the blitz of scholarship stories, we will be back to only a few newsletters a month. If you don't want to read our newsletter at all, please use the safe unsubcribe link at the bottom of this newsletter.

You can help by forwarding their stories to people who might be able to help them. One supporter is getting people interested by showing them the scholarship movies. There is some interest from a biology club. Perhaps you know people who are looking for good investments in people. Please forward this newsletter along to them.

They are all such needy and qualified students. Otherwise we would not be moving mountains to help them.
