Zhang Shixin wants to major in Aquaculture

Kindness is what I call Zhang Shixin

Shixin's e-mail address has kindness in it, so I call him kindness. I have found out one thing about Shixin. He only asks for help when he really needs it. Once, he asked that his Blessing Hands tuition be given to someone who needed it more, because his brother had a job then. After a semester, he again asked for tuition help, because the family's situation has changed again. We made room for him again in the program.

Now after a repeat year in high school to make a better national score, he has been admitted to Huanan Agriculture University. His college's tuition is higher than most other colleges. He really needs a scholarship, or he would not be asking for help. His father is in bad health, and his 23 year old brother can't find work. They are farmers. His mother and sister died of disease.

He tells his own story in his Youtube video.

Betty Cutts

I am majoring in aquaculture, because I grew up by the river.
Water surrounds my country. My country is poor.

I want to use my knowledge to help people change their lives. People will be rich. People will help each other, especially those that need help.

Nowadays, our society is full of fierce competition. High pressure forces people to pursue a better education to ensure a better life. Going to a university is one of the best ways to get a better education, so I want to go to college.

First, attending college can help me acquire new knowledge and communication skills. Technology plays an important role in our lives. College is the ideal place for me to learn such knowledge.

Second, studying in college can help a person improve time management. In our society, people live in a busy environment. Research has shown that the more pressure there is, the faster lives people live. So, time is valuable. I must learn how to manage time efficiently. In college I can improve this ability, which will make things convenient.

Third, a college education can build a good future. In some countries, graduating from college is a basic step towards getting a good job. If I am an illiterate, who will employ me? It is obvious that being well-educated is often a key to success. I want to go to college because I want to become a useful man. I know an ignorant man will become a failure, and knowledge will change a man's life.

My elders' lives are hard because they are ignorant, so they hope I will go to college and want me to become a good man. If I go to college, I will study harder than before, and I can help people who need help. I want to pass the spirit of Blessing Hands on forever. I believe the world will be more beautiful, and people will feel the world is warm.

Liang jianzhen

I know my family will not be able to
afford the whole expense of college.
Liang Jianzhen always thinks of helping his family.

Liang Jianzhen is a graduate of the best high school in Qinzhou, and his 17 year old brother is there also. His family values education for their sons. His mother is in poor health and often needs medicine. His father is the only one working to support the large family.
In his thank you letter to Blessing Hands he says, " Without your help, it would have been more difficult to finish my study. Maybe I can't stay in the classroom any more. From your help, I get to know the meaning of life, and I will pass the blessing to others in the future."

Jianzhen is accepted by Guangxi Normal University. He plans to major in accounting.
Now, I introduce myself to you.

My name is Liang Jianzhen. I was born in a small village which is far away from Qinzhou, into a farm family with two sisters and a little brother. Because of our poor condition, our family still lives a hard life.
When I was little, my sisters both dropped out of school because my father didn't have enough money for their study, so they had to go to work instead. Before long, they both married workers and had their own families, so they had no ability to support us anymore.
My grandmother is in her eighties and has to stay in bed all day long. So my mother must care for her day and night and cannot do anything else. My brother is just two years younger than me, in other words, he is now a high school student in our school, too. With us brothers both in school, we have to spend much more money.
As a farmer, my father stays at home all year long, planting a little corn and feeding some birds for some money. In this way he can earn a little money, but when it can't cover our whole expense, then my family is in trouble.logo
Sometimes, I would rather drop out of school and do some thing for my family, but I have no choice but to study in school. College life is around the corner, but there is something that I worry about, I know my family will not be able to afford the whole expense of college. I don't know how to do it.
However, I am really eager to go to college, so I really need help for college. If I can go to college, I will devote myself to the cause. I will pass the love of Blessing Hands to others and will have a bright future.

Thanks,
Liang Jianzhen

Lu Haidan Wants to Teach

Lu Haidan's Family is Behind Her All the Way.
College is starting in China
September 2009
In This Issue
I hope you can give me a hand.
I get their e-mail....

A Brother's Love for His Family

We have heard of sisters sacrificing for brothers, but Lu Haidan's brother is giving up his chance for an excellent high school to save money for his family. Students in China test into high schools as well as colleges. The best students go to the best high schools. Lu Haidan's sixteen year old brother will go to high school this fall, a very expense undertaking, since there is no government tuitions for high school.

However, if a student gives up their chance to attend the best high school they are qualified for and enters a more inferior high school, their tuition is waved and they can also get scholarships. Lu Haiden's brother has done this to save money for his family.

Won't you help Lu Haidan too? She is the one outstanding student chosen from her high school to be a Blessing Hands student. Her Engllogoish name is Angelia. She speaks excellent English. She wants to be a physics or English teacher.

You can see her Youtube video on this page.

I hope you can give me a hand.

Hello! My name is Lu Haidan. I'm 18 years old and have been a Blessing Hands student for three years. I have learned many things from them, like kindness. I believe that I can pass down love to others who need it.

I lost my father when I was 8 years old. Besides, my mother is a person with a disability who can't work. Fortunately, after my father died, my family got $180 yuan ($26.43 US) for living expenses every month from his working department as he was a worker there before. Also, we got a little financial help from our grandpa, so that my younger brother and I were able to go to school. My mother sent us to my grandpa's home. She hoped we could live a better life there. Mother lives alone. If we have a holiday, we will go home to keep her company. Our neighbors are friendly to us. They often give food to us.

However, my younger brother is going to high school next semester, and I am going to university, too. As he was worried about the burden of heavy financial problems, he decided to go to a subordinate high school. In our town, when a student with a better grade enrolls in an inferior high school, they will not only get their tuition waived totally but also scholarships. Therefore, my younger brother made such a choice.

I did not want his decision to be affected because of me. We have relied on government assistance and on tuition reductions from school since our childhood. Now, I have received admission to college. I have been accepted by a university. My future is not a great university. but I will study hard. My family asked me to test for a post-graduate university later. I am thinking on this issue. I think I should do it, but we cannot say what will be.

In short, I hope I could get your help. Thank you!

I get their e-mail and hear their stories.

I know that we are sending many newsletters in a very short time. College has started in China, and we only have a short window to find sponsors. Please forgive us if you are not interested in the scholarship requests. After the blitz of scholarship stories, we will be back to only a few newsletters a month. If you don't want to read our newsletter at all, please use the safe unsubcribe link at the bottom of this newsletter.

You can help by forwarding their stories to people who might be able to help them. One supporter is getting people interested by showing them the scholarship movies. There is some interest from a biology club. Perhaps you know people who are looking for good investments in people. Please forward this newsletter along to them.

They are all such needy and qualified students. Otherwise we would not be moving mountains to help them.

I will Appreciate It All My Life if You Lend me a Hand

My name is Mo Zongli, a 20 year-old boy. I'm from a poor family. There are four people in my family; my parents, my brother and I. We're live in a remote village. My parents are both farmers, so it is difficult for them to farm enough to support my study.

Fortunately, my parents know it well that the only way I can change my future life is to go to school. Though my parents work hard in the field every day, they can't make much money.

In order to afford my schooling my parents use all the money they can farm, so we still live in a small house with only two rooms. I'm afraid that I can't continue my study in the short future. I need help to finish my studies. I'll appreciate it all my life, if you lend me your hand.

Thanks,

Mo Zongli

Give Brown A $500 Scholarship.
logoLiao Fuzhan Has Tried Hard.

Liao Fuzhan, whose English name is Brown, is another student who has repeated his last year of high school. He has done extra tutoring to improve his national score from 429 to 447. He is majoring in computers or electricity and has been admitted to Qindao Harbor Vocational and Technical College.

You can see a short Youtube movie of him here.

We are usually lost in trouble

logo My name is Liao Fuzhan. I am 20. Last term I still studied at Yangshuo Li Jiang Higher Middle School. I have graduated from school through my hard try. I have got a good mark on the national exam. Last year I studied at Baisha Middle School. In order to get a high mark, I studied hard. The teachers made me a monitor and gave me lots of encouragement, which made me full of energy.

In my family, I am the first person to attend college. My parents have high expectations for me. They want my future life to be good. Our family lives in a small, remote village. We share the belief that only studying hard can change our future. You know, in our village entering college is the best way to have a bright future.

There are four people in my family. We don't have enough land to grow crops, and my parents are only running a small orchard. My mother and father work at home. The climate is poor, and my parents lack administration and technique, so the crops don't grow well. The gain can't meet our year's need. We are usually lost in trouble.

My younger brother and I were both students in high school at the same time. We needed much tuition money. My family had to go into high debt. Seeing this situation, my uncle helped us a lot. He offered some necessities and guided my parents now to manage the crops, helping us get rid of the difficulties. Blessing Hands also gave me selfless help. I don't know how I can express my appreciation. I will study hard to pay back anyone who helps me.

I will never say give up. I know my future may be full of difficulties, but I still believe the bright future will come at last. But something troubles me a lot. In order to pay for the high fees, now my family is in difficulties. How I wish I could get your selfless help. If I can get your help, the way to my bright future will be easier.

Though I have graduated from school, I never stop working. I also read some books and help my parents. You know they have to do a lot for me. Besides, I must get ready to attend college.
That's all.

Thank you,
Liao Fuzhan

Luo Piaoling

If you look closely in the corner of Luo Piaoling's eyes, you will see the tears she was unable to hold back when she interviewed for a scholarship in Qinzhou.

Piaoling is one of our students who took her last year of high school over. We don't give students tuition for a repeated year, but we do consider them for scholarships. She brought her national score up to 538, the third highest of all our students applying. She plans to major in English teaching or economics and has been accepted into a key university. What a success story!

There are four students in her farm family who need educational expenses. She has a 16 year old sister, a 14 year old brother, and 10 year old brother. Her mother is often ill and cannot help to support the family.

The pressure of studying and interviewing must have weighed on her. She dissolved into sobs during the interview. I finally just hugged her and cried with her. The tears of scholarship applicants just make me more determined to help them in any way I can. Please help her realize her dream of going to college.

You can see her scholarship movie at this Youtube address. We edited out the te
ars.

Where There is a Will There is a Way.

My name is Luo Piaoling, a 19-year- old girl. Thank you very much for giving me help. I have been a Blessing Hands student since 2007. I graduated from Qinzhou No. 8 Middle School in 2008, but then I studied in Qinzhou No.1 Middle School this year. This is my application for a Blessing Hands scholarship for the fall of 2009.

I didn't do well in the college entrance examination of 2008, but I don't lose my heart. I have been trying my best and made big progress in the entrance examination of 2009, scoring 538. I intend to major in English teaching or economics in Guangxi University.

I am confident of my future. I want to change our life by education. However, my family is too poor to afford the high tuition of college, though my father is working hard to earn money. My father is making his effort to pay our tuition, but sometimes he can hardly make it. My mother is weak and needs treatment now and then. Four children are at school.

However, I don't give up my education. I always believe that I will be able to change our life by working hard. I can face the difficulty, because I get love and encouragement from many friends, my family, my teachers and Blessing Hands. "Where there is a will, there is a way. I need your help to fulfill my education. I think a college education will make me get more knowledge and skills to help others.

Sincerely
Luo Piaoling

He Songke Wants to Study Biology.

GIve $500 Scholarship
logoWatch a Youtube movie of He Songke.

He Songke has the highest national test score (589) of all our students applying for scholarships this year. He is from the Pubei area of China. and graduated from the best high school in Qinzhou. He has always wanted to be a doctor, and help other people.
He has a 22 year old brother who is also in college and a 24 year old sister who is a worker. He especially needs a scholarship to college. since his college is more expensive than others.

He Songke
In his own words

logo I am He Songke, a student from No.1 Middle School in Qinzhou, China. Blessing Hands has been giving me help since I was in senior 2. I really appreciate the charity.

I was received by Xi'an
Jiao Tong University after the college entrance examination.
I will major in biology when I get to school this fall. I think I have a special fate with bioengineering. I started learning biology five years ago.
I fell in love with this subject, and when I was in senior 2, I studied biology again. It was more complex and interesting, and more surprising, I will study biology at my college, so I am very happy. Maybe that is what we call fate.

But the most impotent thing is that I have a special love for biology. I love the beautiful flowers, the green trees and grasses, the animals and the mysterious world. This interests me and leads me to study what they are and how they are made. Studying biology cannot only help me find a job I like to support my life, but also will give me a chance to know more about this lovely world.

The most important thing is that it can give me a chance to do something good for human beings. For example, I want to develop good medicine for the sick, cheap products for the poor, more food for the hungry and a more beautiful world for us all. I am eager to go to college to learn more.

I had a dream that one day I would become a doctor. When I was young, I saw many people died of diseases. Now, I can see a lot of suffering from deadly diseases. If a person is poor, he cannot afford to go to the hospital. He may buy some medicines from the store and take them, or he does not take any medicine. What he does is to bear the pain. The disease can make a strong man suffer weakness. I feel sorry for them. If a person suffers a deadly disease he needs to go to the hospital, but if he is so poor that he cannot pay the fee, he will refuse to go to the hospital. As a result, he dies. This is terrible.

I have met many difficulties because of the tuition. Both my parents are farmers. Though they work hard, they can earn little. My elder brother is studying at college. It costs lots of money, so my parents can't afford my tuition any longer. I need your help. With your help, I can go on with my study and realize my dream to become a biologist. What you do will help change my life, and maybe the lives of other people.

Thank you!
He Songke

Colleges in China
How do they select students?

Getting into college in China is a very stressful undertaking. There is only one entrance test given every June for several days at the same time all over China.

Students endure pretests and extra tutoring beginning in August to make the best score possible during the all important test. Parents, teachers, and students seem to think of nothing else for the whole year. It reminds me of the civil service exams given by the emperors in old times to select the top jobs of the kingdom. Family honor rides on the test score of their child.

Internet access is restricted during the last month to encourage students to concentrate only on the coming tests. Teachers teach for the test and nothing is allowed to interfere. Even traffic is restricted outside the schools chosen to be test centers.

Students have to submit applications to the three colleges of their choice weeks before the test. They don't know how high their score might be, but they hope and apply.

Many students are competing for key colleges. There is strategy involved to choose the right second and third school in case the first school does not admit them. Sometimes they don't get
a good score or don't get admitted to their first choice of colleges and decide to retake their last year again, hoping for a better outcome. Four of the twelve students applying for college in Qinzhou have repeated their last year of high school determined to get into a better college. Some times no college accepts them although they have a good score. Perhaps too many student with good scores applied to the same college.

When the all important letter of acceptance finally arrives, they have to scurry to find financial help. Even then they might not get the major they want, if too many others have also applied for that major. The colleges make decisions based on the needs of the college or country policies not the desire of the students.

He has done all the hard work. You can help him and many others that he will help throughout his life.
